CONTROL Resonant Story & Missions — Guide
Not sure whether an objective advances the campaign, unlocks movement or opens an optional story? We identify the activity type first, then connect it to the location and encounter files we can support without inventing a mission order from review footage.

What this guide helps you accomplish
Start by separating Dylan's Journey from Jesse Quests, World Quests, Faults and short Zone activities. This guide connects mission prerequisites, movement rewards and verified routes so you can decide what advances the story, what opens traversal and what can wait.

Identify the mission line before choosing the route
Dylan's Journey is the campaign, Jesse Quests open important movement options, World Quests carry self-contained stories, and Faults are separate activity routes. Bounties, puzzles, challenges and discoveries are shorter Zone activities rather than campaign chapters.
Use the objective name, Zone and reward type together. The route database records paths with a repeatable starting point; exact steps are only added when the entry condition and result can be checked on a named version.
| Mission line | What it changes | Check before leaving |
|---|---|---|
| Dylan's Journey | Advances the main narrative | Current Zone objective and required encounter |
| Jesse Quests | Unlocks traversal and access options | Whether a blocked route names the missing ability |
| World Quests | Opens optional stories and local outcomes | Quest giver, Zone and prerequisite |
| Faults | Runs a focused route with hazards and rewards | Entrance, movement gate and safe return point |
02 / Mission structure
Use the three main quest chains to clear progression gates
The released game runs three progression tracks in parallel. Contain the Crisis carries the main story, Search for Jesse sends Dylan through Faults that award traversal tools, and Defeating Resonants opens Combat Ability branches. A supporting mission such as Pope's Research can also become a direct story prerequisite.
When a main objective stalls, do not immediately assume the marker is broken. Check whether Search for Jesse supplies the missing movement tool, whether the current story step requires a regional Resonant, or whether a named supporting mission has been left open.
Before repeating an old workaround, confirm that version 1.4.2 is installed. Hotfix 1.4.1 repaired the Park Resonant Mold-eating blocker, while 1.4.2 repaired Zoe failing to appear in House in Distress, the Busken and Underhill dialogue stop, the Gap exit after The Artist and Ranger escorts that would not reset.
| Quest chain | What it advances | Typical gate it solves |
|---|---|---|
| Contain the Crisis | Main narrative through Manhattan and The Unknown | Story objective, regional boss or supporting mission |
| Search for Jesse | Incursion, Subway and Underpass Fault routes | Shift, Reach and other traversal requirements |
| Defeating Resonants | Regional boss objectives and Combat Ability rewards | Mural progress, build branches and linked story gates |
| World Quests and Zone activities | Optional stories, World Feats and regional progression | Completion and Zone-level goals rather than the next main step |
03 / Geography
How should you move through Manhattan Zones?
Remedy describes large, visually distinct handcrafted Zones rather than one flat open-world checklist. The FBC field office serves as a connecting hub. Gravity Anomalies and abilities such as Reach and Shift change traversal, so an inaccessible path may be a later return point rather than a missed jump.
When we enter a new Zone, we would note the hub exit, current story marker, optional leads, and any traversal obstacle we cannot solve yet. Come back after a movement unlock. It is a simple way to stay oriented without pretending every alley, secret, and fast-travel point is already mapped.

| If your clue is… | First identify… | Then open… |
|---|---|---|
| A different Zone name | The current in-game objective and whether you are leaving a Zone | The locations index and FBC field office file |
| Subway or moving trains | Whether Search for Jesse points to the Subway Fault | The released route database; Reach is the traversal reward |
| An unreachable gap | Your current movement tools, not a guessed collectible pin | The Reach file and the first-run return checklist |
04 / Released opening
Use Orientation to learn the route, build and boss loop
Orientation follows Dylan leaving confinement, receiving the Aberrant, making contact with Zoe and entering the Manhattan crisis. Its staged tutorials introduce basic melee, dodge, movement and the Gap build space.
A newcomer should use the route to learn the melee-to-Power loop and test early Forms rather than chase hidden rewards. Orientation ends at The Artist, where the first Combat Ability branch and version 1.3.3 Reset Item reward make the opening build decisions concrete.

05 / Known activity
Subway Fault and the Reach traversal unlock
Jesse Sightings: The Subway Fault runs through distorted transit spaces, moving-train hazards and Mold pressure before awarding Reach. It is part of the Search for Jesse track, not a regional Resonant reward or a collectible detour.
Read the platform and train cycle before committing to movement, then use Reach on the marked anchor points. After the unlock, return to separated platforms and routes that previously looked physically impossible rather than searching the Combat Ability loadout for the new tool.
06 / Regional encounters
Match every regional Resonant to its route and reward
The Deserter in Central and the Dancer in West Incursion are linked to an important midgame gate. The Dancer route needs Shift from The Incursion Fault, while the Deserter route enters the Patterned Factory and furnace. Later regional Resonants use their own Mold, Astral and Unknown route requirements.
Treat each victory as both a world-state change and a build decision. The reward branch opens new Combat Ability roles, while the resulting Resonant Cycle refreshes and strengthens regional activity. Check the route before changing the entire loadout.

07 / Time budget
How long should you allow for the story?
In its September 15 PS5 briefing, Remedy estimated 25–35 hours for the main story, with more for completionists. An earlier developer interview described roughly 30 hours for the core experience and around 50 for completionist play. The two statements describe different scopes, not measured completion times from the retail population.
World Quests, puzzles, optional encounters and exploration can extend a first playthrough. New Game Plus is an additional replay path; do not automatically count a full second run inside a first-run completion estimate.
08 / Reading method
Keep a spoiler-aware route as you play
The campaign can offer more than one priority lead. Follow the objective that advances the system or Zone you need, and use Jesse Quests when a missing traversal power is the obstacle. Write down optional story leads rather than treating every icon as urgent.
Use the in-game objective log for your current step and this site's mission files for the activity type. Reviews confirm that Manhattan remains explorable after the ending, so optional cleanup does not have to interrupt every campaign beat; exact missable exceptions still need direct testing.
